A special screening of North Pond: Search for Intraterrestrials featuring local research scientist Dr. Beth Orcutt of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences will be shown on Thursday June 11 at 7 pm at the Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta. Dr. Orcutt will introduce the film and be available to answer questions after the screening. The event is free and open to the public.

The 90-minute documentary showcases several recent ocean expeditions where scientists, including Dr. Orcutt, set about to uncover the mysteries of life in the deep. The documentary won Best Documentary Feature at the [140]2014 Yosemite Film Fest and Honorable Mention at the [141]2014 Blue Ocean Film fest. A trailer is available [142]here.

"We are delighted to bring this documentary to the community and are very excited that Dr. Orcutt is willing to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to explore the deep-sea and to make a movie about it," says Andrew Fenniman, title. "The filmmakers spent months with the scientific team on two different expeditions so both learned a lot about the demands of each discipline."

North Pond is a field site on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the largest undersea mountain range in the world. Dr. Orcutt and her colleagues used the latest scientific drilling equipment to collect samples that allow them to study life on and within the deep oceanic crust. They also used the remotely operated vehicle Jason to get a closeup view of life on the ocean bottom.

Lincoln Theater's mission is to be the major community resource for the promotion and production of the performing arts.News Sidebar
