Research Interests

I am a Benchtop generalist working primarily on devising methods to reduce methane emissions from ruminating livestock. To this end, I utilize a variety of techniques including, gene editing, culturing of various genetically modified yeast and algae strains, and protein purification as well as characterization. I am interested in the potential of heterologous expression of proteins and other bioactive compounds found in marine organisms to improve and revolutionize the agricultural and other large-scale industries.

Cell Culturing
  • Growth and maintenance of various yeast and microalgal cell lines.
  • Large scale yeast cultivation operations utilizing 10L bioreactor.
  • Media prep
  • Aseptic technique

Molecular biology assays and techniques
  • Large- and small-scale cell lysis using a variety of physical methods
  • PCR proficiency and experience with primer development
  • Mini preps and DNA isolations
  • PCR clean-ups
  • Gibson Assembly and other recombinant expression techniques.
  • ELISA’s, Bradford and other plate-based assays
  • Protein and DNA visualization using SDS-PAGE and TAE agarose

Analytical techniques/instrument experience
  • Plate reader
  • Flourometer
  • UV/VIS Spectrophotometer
  • Protein purification using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC)
