Research Interests

My research focuses on the chemical reactions that occur within marine sediments and how those reactions influence ocean chemistry through time. This research has tight connections to how we interpret the geologic record as many of the elements that I study serve as proxies for past ocean chemistry and biology. Through my research, I spend a significant amount of time in the field, and I have accumulated several years of field experience over the past three decades. I have participated in large multi-investigator programs such as the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), IODP expeditions, and many other expeditions of varying size and length. I have also worked in freshwater systems including Crater Lake (Oregon), Lake Superior, and Lake Tanganyika.
