Research Interests

I am interested in the ecological rules governing energy and nutrient exchange between primary producers and their microbiomes. As a microbiologist with a background in physiology and ecology working at Bigelow, I use isolate-anchored approaches to address knowledge gaps in complex marine ecosystems. I am currently developing methods to quantify carbon cycling in communities centered around phago-mixotrophic protists, which are single celled plankton that use both photosynthesis and phagotrophy (prey consumption) to survive and thrive. I work with Nicole Poulton, Karen Stamieszkin, Laura Lubelczyk and a rotating cast of undergraduate researchers in the Center for Aquatic Cytometry.
