Research Interests

Johnathan Evanilla is passionate about the ocean and loves data containing observations of it. Johnathan enjoys combining emerging streams of observational data with accessible machine learning methods to co-develop ocean forecasts with their intended end users. The three components of this process include engineering a data pipeline, building and refining a predictive model and effectively delivering the forecast to its users. Deployment of a forecast is an iterative process, rather than an event, and end-user feedback is constantly incorporated into each component. He also recently assisted in the transition of and now supports maintaining the data products and digital infrastructure associated with the National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP).

Johnathan will happily join you on the water any chance he gets, whether it be via fishing vessel, surfboard, sailboat or just for a swim. He also enjoys water in its solid state during the colder months on skis or a snowboard.
