George Putnam


About George Putnam

George Putnam is chairman of New Generation Research, Inc., a data publishing firm. He is also a retired hedge fund manager, and in 2026 retired after more than 40 years as a trustee of the Putnam Group of Mutual Funds.

Growing up on the coast north of Boston and spending summers on Mount Desert Island, Maine, George developed a lifelong interest in marine biology. He wrote his undergraduate thesis on the history of marine biology in the U.K. during the latter part of the 19th century. He has served on the boards of the Marine Biological Laboratory and Sea Education Association, both of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and currently serves on the board of the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

George holds A.B., M.B.A and J.D. degrees from Harvard University. He is an avid sailor and gardener. He and his wife Kathy have three children and four grandchildren. They live in Manchester, Massachusetts, and spend as much time as they can on Mount Desert Island.
