Research Interests

My current research focuses on the phylogenetic and metabolic diversity of neutrophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria. I am involved in several projects that include examining the phylogenetic diversity of iron-oxidizing bacteria at the Loihi seamount, characterizing the physiology and ecology of iron-oxidizing bacteria from a local wetland iron-seep. I am broadly interested in the physiological conditions that allow micro-organisms to grow and make their living off inorganic substrates. 

Prior to working at Bigelow Laboratory I completed a PhD in Microbiology at the University of California, Davis. Working in the laboratory of Douglas C Nelson, I determined the relative contribution of sulfate-reducing and iron-reducing bacteria to mercury methylation in both freshwater and marine systems.
