Research Interests

Microbes and environment are connected by a complex web of interactions, so that when there is a change in one, it has an impact on the other. Extreme environments are particularly interesting because physiochemical conditions can be substantially different to those of standard conditions. This presents different challenges and opportunities for the extreme microbial communities that live there.

Previously, I investigated how extremely acidophilic bacteria and pyrite mineral interactions resulted in the peculiar physiochemical conditions of the drainage water at two primarily subterranean study sites in the North Wales area (UK).

Currently I am looking at microbe-mineral interactions much deeper in the earth (the deep biosphere), where resources are extremely limited.
