Small Vessels and Scuba Facilities

Bigelow Laboratory owns three small vessels for near-shore field work: a 22' Sea Hawk center console (130 hp outboard), a 20' Aquasport center console (90 hp outboard), and a 13' rigid-bottom inflatable (25 hp outboard). The two larger vessels are outfitted with Vhf radios and depth finders; the Sea Hawk is also equipped with a chart plotter. Each vessel has its own trailer. Vessel charter may be arranged.

Scuba diving is an integral part of the research undertaken by some investigators at Bigelow Laboratory. The Lab requires all scientific divers to be certified by the American Academy of Underwater Scientists and to adhere to Bigelow's dive safety policy. Investigators supply their own dive equipment. Emergency oxygen/First aid kits are available for loan and must accompany dive expeditions. Access to air and arrangements for dive locker space for local projects can be made through the University of Maine's Darling Marine Center in Walpole.
