The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and The Maine Department of Marine Resources Library and Information Center is a shared collection, housed on the two campuses of the supporting institutions in East Boothbay and West Boothbay Harbor. Each campus features an open stack research library with holdings and services that reflect each laboratory's mission, and are developed and maintained for the support of the researchers, educational programs, and visiting investigators of the respective institutions. Open to the public, the collection at Maine DMR in West Boothbay, also welcomes members of the fishing and aquaculture industries, educators, and the general public.
A major resource for marine science materials on the East coast, the collection includes 15,000 volumes, paper and online serial subscriptions, technical reports, videocassette tapes, and DVDs. The Bigelow Laboratory collection emphasizes the key processes that drive the world's ocean ecosystems, and their relationship to life on Earth, including microbial oceanography at the molecular level to global ocean processes. The Maine DMR collection supports the research, monitoring, and assessment programs of the commercial species of Maine conducted at the Bureau of Marine Science. A small special collection called The Fishermen's Library contains books, pamphlets, videocassettes, and DVDs on fishing gear and methods, fishery history, and aquaculture.
The Library in West Boothbay Harbor is open for research purposes during regular work hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Library staff is available from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and alternate Fridays. Reference services include electronic resources and interlibrary loan. Circulation privileges are offered to all staff, and to the public with appropriate identification. The Library is closed to the public on weekends.
The Library in East Boothbay is currently open to staff and laboratory affiliates only for research purposes during regular work hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Library staff is available from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, and alternate Fridays. Reference services include electronic resources and interlibrary loan. Circulation privileges are offered to all staff and affiliates.
