BIGELOW LABORATORY PUBLIC MEETING MARCH 15: OCEAN CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
WEST BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME – Bigelow Laboratory has scheduled a public information meeting on Tuesday, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Boothbay Fire Station on School Street for townspeople and area residents to hear an update about construction at the Laboratory's new Ocean Science and Education Campus. Laboratory Executive Director Dr. Graham Shimmield will lead the discussion and describe the latest developments and plans at the 64-acre site. Project Shepherd Dr. Willie Wilson and Facilities Manager Marty Getrich will also be present to answer any questions.
Ground was broken in a ceremony at the site in early September 2010, and construction has proceeded throughout the winter. State and federal awards and private gifts are making it possible for over 60,000 square feet of new, state-of-the-art science facilities on the campus to be completed by spring 2012, providing over 200 construction jobs in the region.
An independent, nonprofit research institution based in midcoast Maine, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is a center for global ocean research. The Laboratory’s research ranges from microbial oceanography -- examining biological productivity in the world’s oceans at the molecular level -- to the large-scale biogeochemical processes that drive interactions between ocean ecosystems and global environmental conditions. These programs have taken Bigelow scientists around the world to every ocean and the polar seas. Photo by Marty Getrich. ####
