WEST BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME – Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences invites the public to its 2011 summer open house on Monday, August 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 180 McKown Point Road in West Boothbay Harbor. Visitors will have a chance to talk with the Bigelow scientists who are exploring the world’s oceans and hear about new discoveries in oceanography. Hands-on demonstrations of ocean science in action include technologies to study plankton, bioluminescence, and the microbial processes at the foundation of the marine food web. Ocean sampling equipment will be available on the dock. Guests of all ages are welcome, rain or shine. For more information, call (207) 633-9600.
Bigelow Laboratory conducts research ranging from microbial oceanography -- examining the biology in the world’s oceans at the molecular level -- to the large-scale ocean processes that affect global environmental conditions. Recognized as a leader in Maine’s emerging innovation economy, the Laboratory is spurring significant economic growth in the state through construction of a major Ocean Science and Education Campus in East Boothbay.
