West Boothbay Harbor, ME Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is the recipient of a $5000 grant from the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation to its Keller BLOOM High School Program. The Keller BLOOM program is an intensive week of marine science activities that are typical of the work conducted by Bigelow researchers. Scientists at the Lab, by example and enthusiasm, encourage young people to consider science as a career path. Whether or not the students ultimately choose a scientific career, they gain a richer understanding of their environment and are encouraged to be responsible stewards of the earth.
“I am delighted that Bangor Savings Bank has recognized the importance of encouraging young people to consider a future in ocean science,” said Dr. Graham Shimmield, Bigelow Laboratory’s Executive Director. “The Keller BLOOM Program gives Maine high school students an intensive, hands-on research experience that demonstrates the scope of our work -- from the sea’s microscopic organisms to global ocean systems -- and shows that ocean research is an expanding and exciting career choice. This program is integral to the Laboratory's focus on ocean science education.”
“This grant award from our Foundation to Bigelow Laboratory of Ocean Sciences signifies our commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve by supporting programs like the Keller BLOOM High School Program that inspires and encourages high school students for opportunities in the science field,” said Carol Colson, Senior Vice President and Director of Community Relations and Communications.
