The Bigelow Laboratory and Maine Department of Marine Resources Library and Information Center is a shared facility featuring an open stack research library whose collections and services are developed and maintained for the support of the researchers, students and visiting investigators of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and the Maine State Department of Marine Resources. Open to the public, the Library also welcomes members of the fishing and aquaculture industries, educators and the general public.
A major resource for marine science materials on the East coast, the Library's holdings include 15,000 volumes, 200 current serial subscriptions, 5000 reprints and technical reports and 75 videocassette tapes. The main collection emphasizes the biological and physical study of the ocean with major strengths in marine productivity and the commercial species of the Gulf of Maine. A small special collection called the Fishermen's Library contains books, pamphlets and videocassette tapes on fishing gear and methods, fishery history, and aquaculture.
The Library is open for research purposes during regular working hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Library staff is available from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to provide answers to individual research questions and to guide patrons in the use of print and electronic materials. Reference services include online searching of more than 600 databases and interlibrary loan. Circulation privileges and a photocopy machine are offered to all staff, and are available to the general public with appropriate identification. The Library is closed to the public on weekends.
