Scientist looks through microscope

Our scientists are at the forefront of ocean science in developing, testing, and applying advanced technologies and methods as part of their oceanographic research. Bigelow Laboratory offers researchers access to methodologies that open new frontiers of scientific inquiry through a wide array of applications, both at the laboratory, in the field, and for use in other scientific disciplines.

Bigelow Laboratory is home to the Provasoli-Guillard National Center for the Culture of Marine Phytoplankton (CCMP), which is the official phytoplankton collection in the United States and provides cultures for scientists around the world. With more than 2,400 strains, the CCMP is the world's largest phytoplankton collection.

Other key Bigelow facilities include the J. J. MacIsaac Facility for Aquatic Cytometry, the Microbial Single Cell Genomics Laboratory, the Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscope Facility, Remote Sensing Facilities, the Molecular Biology Facility, and the Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometry Facility.

In addition, researchers at Bigelow Laboratory work with several small vessels and SCUBA equipment for near-shore work.

Bigelow also maintains a library and information center in partnership with the Maine Department of Marine Resources.
