The Keller BLOOM Program

A Research Experience for High School Juniors
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine hosted its nineteenth annual weeklong internship in marine sciences for Maine high school juniors from May 18 - May 22, 2008.
Background
The program provides opportunities for involvement in on-going marine research to students with demonstrated aptitude in science. Activities include field sampling in a variety of marine environments, with subsequent data collection and analysis using state-of-the-art instrumentation. In addition, discussions are initiated on science and public policy, scientific ethics and career directions. Outcomes include understanding methods of investigation, broadening and strengthening the students' interest in science, and a forum for interaction among students and scientists.
Sixteen students are selected to participate; the Laboratory, under chaperoned conditions, provides room and board. Students are involved in laboratory workshops and field studies including a one-day research cruise. Special lectures and field trips are also planned.
Selection Criteria
Applications are evaluated based upon academic record, level of interest and communication skills as evidenced by a written essay, and two letters of recommendation.
