Curriculum Vitae
Graham Shimmield graduated from the University of Durham in Geology, and received a Ph.D. in Marine Geochemistry from the University of Edinburgh in 1985, where he remained until 1996 as part of the academic staff. He then became the combined director of Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS) and the NERC-funded Institute, within the Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory (DML).
Graham's particular interest is in marine geochemistry, which includes the fundamental studies of geochemical processes operating in oceans through identifying indicators of ocean and climate change, and examining human impacts and contamination in coastal and deep seas. In this context he has studied the environmental impact of off shore oil installations and their decommissioning. Currently he is chairman of the Shetland Oil Terminal Environmental Advisory Group (SOTEAG).
In 2000, Graham was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and the Institute of Biology. He has been president and is currently vice-president of the new European Federation of Marine Science and Technology Societies (EFMS). Currently, he is Chairman of the European Census of Marine Life Program. He joined Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in 2008.
Graham has served on many national and international committees, including the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) science strategy board, and is involved with the International Polar Year, leading a major program in the European Arctic region. He has published over 65 scientific peer-reviewed articles.
