About Chester Shuman

Chester 'Chet' Shuman graduated from Harvard College with a degree in Engineering and Applied Physics. Chet started his career in computing with IBM. In the early 70’s he co-founded Harper and Shuman, Inc. and was CEO following the retirement of his partner. Harper and Shuman and its successor is the leading provider of management software to the architectural and engineering professions. Chet led the firm for 25 years through successive waves of change in the computer software industry. Following retirement, he became quite active with the North Shore United Way in Beverly, MA. He was a member of the Board of Trustees and the Investment Committee and chaired the Endowment and Major Gifts Committees. In addition to serving on committees at his church and yacht clubs, he finally had time to do some serious offshore sailing. Chet and his wife Evelyn have homes in Hamilton, MA and Westport Island, ME and spend as much time as possible with their children and grandchildren at their home on the Sheepscot River. A love of boating, a house on the water, and over thirty years of cruising the New England coast, along with several sails to Bermuda and beyond gave Chet a deep appreciation of the oceans and the need to protect and preserve that environment. A personal connection to Bigelow, several tours of the facility, including introducing others from near their home in Massachusetts, gave Chet and Evelyn an understanding of how work at the lab will help us all better understand the oceans and their vital contribution to the earth’s environment. Serving on the Advisory Board is both an honor and a way to contribute in some small way to the invaluable work of the lab.
