About Barbara Burgess

Barbara Burgess began her deep admiration for everything “blue” early while racing small sailboats in the Midwest. With her Dad she sailed the islands of Maine and her ocean passion grew. After attending the Williams College Mystic Seaport Maritime Studies Program she graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in Education and Environmental Studies. From working as a deckhand onboard a schooner to teaching for both Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum and Mystic Marinelife Aquarium her determination to protect the sea expanded. Currently Barbara is a Trustee at the New England Aquarium. She is Co-Founder and current Chair of Women Working for Oceans (W2O). She serves on the University of Colorado’s CMCI Advisory Board. Barbara and her husband Bill have fun keeping track of five kids while splitting time between Portland and Boothbay Harbor, ME.
